What is an allergy?

An allergy occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to allergens such as pollen and dust mites, which are harmless to everyone else. When it comes into contact with the allergens the body produces the anti-body, immunoglobin E which causes chemicals such as histamine which are responsible for the symptoms of allergies.

There are different symptoms for different allergies. Hay fever, or pollen allergy, affects both eyes and nose, causing sneezing, blocked nose and watery, itchy eyes. Dermatitis, or eczema, affects the skin and causes itchy rashes. Another common allergy is asthma, which affects the respiratory system, causing breathlessness, wheezing and a cough. Anaphylaxis is a very serious allergy which causes a wide spread itchy rash, a dramatic drop in blood pressure and even loss of consciousness.

So, what causes allergies? The evidence shows that genetics have a lot to do with causing allergic reactions. While a person doesn’t inherit an allergy, they can inherit a predisposition for an allergy. An allergy caused in this way is known as an atopic allergy. The first year of life is very important for people who are atopic. Studies show that atopic children who are exposed to large amounts of allergen are more likely to develop a hyper sensitive immune system which is the root cause of allergic reactions.

Allergy Testing

Let’s take a closer look at some of the common allergies that can be developed.

Skin allergy:

Dermatitis, or eczema, causes itchy, red, swollen and cracked skin. Atopic eczema starts in childhood and increases in severity throughout the years. For children, affected areas include the back of the knees and front of the elbows. For adults, the hands and feet are the commonly affected areas. Many atopics also develop hay fever and asthma.

Dust mite allergy:

The dust mite may be the most common trigger for perennial allergies and asthma. The dust mite is tiny, almost invisible, but ubiquitous. It is found everywhere in the world. Symptoms of dust mite allergy include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and nose. Symptoms of asthma include difficulty breathing and chest tightness or pain.

Pollen allergy:

A very common trigger of seasonal allergies, pollen comes from plants which release tiny pollen grains to fertilize other plants of the same genus. Trees, weeds and grasses are the most common producers of allergy causing pollen. Pollen travels by wind, so it is easy to come into contact with. Symptoms of pollen allergy include sneezing, runny nose, redness and swelling around the eyes and itchiness around the nose, ears, eyes and mouth.  A common well-known pollen allergy is HAYFEVER.

Pet allergy:

This is very common especially among people with other allergies or asthma. Cat allergies are twice as common as dog allergies. Symptoms include swelling and itchiness around the eyes and nose. A scratch by a pet can cause the area to become red and petting the animal can cause itchy eyes.

Latex allergy:

Latex is a natural rubber substance found in many everyday products such as balloons, rubber bands, bandages and gloves. Allergic reactions can be caused by either breathing in latex fibres in the air or having skin contact with the latex. Synthetic latex does not cause an allergic reaction. There are three types of reaction to latex: IgE – mediated allergic reactions, cell – mediated contact dermatitis and instant dermatitis. Symptoms include itchy, red or swollen skin where it has come into contact with the latex. More severe reactions include hives, breathing problems and anaphylaxis.

Food Allergy:

A food allergy, like other allergies, is the result of a hypersensitive immune system that is triggered when certain foods are ingested. The most common foods involved include milk, peanuts, eggs and fruit. The people most at risk are those who have a family history of allergies, those with a vitamin D deficiency and those who are obese.  More information on our Food Intolerance Testing page.

Allergy Testing Diagnosis

Marion Finucane utilises a holistic, non-invasive approach to the testing and balancing of allergies. There are 100’s of common environmental, food, chemical and pharmaceutical she tests and balances her patients for.

By testing various muscles and their reflex actions against a particular allergen, she can detect if your body is reacting adversely against a substance such as food, chemicals, environmental (including pollen) and others.

My family have commented from the first visit how much better I looked.

I started seeing Marion this April following a recommendation. I came to see Marion because I had hayfever and other environmental allergies. I couldn't breathe and was shut down physically and mentally.

Within just a few days of seeing Marion for the first time I was getting control back. My family have commented from the first visit how much better I looked.

I was no longer able to work and after seeing Marion I have now been able to go back to work. I have also found myself to be stronger mentally and able to make and stick to my decisions better.

I am very happy with the results I have achieved.

When I went to see Marion I was having a lot of discomfort with runny nose and watery eyes. She handled my problem with pollen and she also tested me on various foods, drinks and household items and handled those that were causing me trouble too. I am very happy with the results I have achieved. Thank you Marion.
